Dr Oz’s advice to find a health advocate is right on!Our company provides a companion/health advocate for people who are in the hospital or in a nursing home. We make a difference!

Kathleen,
I’m sure, you are doing great work! But there are so many “gurus” in this world, selling all kinds of stuff.
How do we weed out the good from the bad? Please help us with a solution for the people out there searching fro real answers to real problems?
And please feel free to tell us about the good things, people do care about the good things. I know I do.

I agree with you that there are a lot of “gurus” out there and people must be careful especially when making decisions about healthcare. We all know to (1) ask questions and (2) check references, but don’t forget to trust your own instinct about people. There are several good sources for healthcare references.-Ask your doctor, local hospital (the social worker’s office) and your neighbors for references.
As for the ‘good stories’, there are so many! I spend a lot of time in hospitals and nursing homes, not known to be the cheeriest of places. However, people are doing the ‘good things’ each and every day. I’ve seen doctors cure people, nurses take extra time with an upset relative, volunteers go out to buy a crossword book for a patient who had no relatives and no visitors. And then there’s us, Hospital Companions. We think we are doing the ‘good things’ too
