Feel bad about your progress?

walking progressIt’s only natural and it happens to everyone, a lack of noticeable progress sometimes can brings you down. You’re working your butt off every week and it’s easy to have a “that” day when you’re not happy. A glance in the mirror and the flood of disappointment hits you. Why am I working so hard? I’ll tell you why.

Even when I’m right on track with my monthly workout schedule, I have those days too when I’m not happy with my “external” progress. That’s when I try to focus on the big picture, where was I over a year ago, where am I now and where am I going? The realization hits me right between the eyes, if I hadn’t walked all those miles, I’d still be back at thirty pounds too heavy. I’m much closer to my goal, my spirits lift – I keep going!

I know it can still be disheartening but don’t give up, Self Magazine provides some myth busting resources in this article, “Fitness Myths Busted!” By Lucy Danziger, SELF Editor-in-Chief:

MYTH: Muscle turns into fat
REALITY: Muscle and fat are two completely different tissues that have different functions, so it’s physiologically impossible to turn one into the other. If you stop exercising, your muscles atrophy, so you lose the tone you worked so hard to create. And if you eat more calories than you burn, you’ll gain fat.

MYTH: You need to exercise 30 minutes straight to get fit.
REALITY: Three 10-minute cardio stints offer the same healthy payback as a single 30-minute one. If you are trying to peel off pounds, of course, the more you do, the faster you’ll succeed. But don’t feel guilty if all you can squeeze in is a few minutes here and a few minutes there—it all adds up.

These are just two of the nine myths busted in the article, take a look at the full story, it’s a very good read. I know how it feels on “that” day but keep on walking, it will get you where you’re going. And you are making progress, although it looks and feels like no progress, you’re building a foundation. Keep going or get going – you can do it!
