Watch that first step…

Posted by: mike zume    Tags:  NIDDK, start walking, walk    Posted date:  February 5, 2009

first step… it’s a doozy!

Not really but it can be hard to start an exercise program. Here’s one of the most respected names in the medical industry, The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) which conducts and supports basic and clinical research on many of the most serious diseases affecting public health.

Here’s what they have to say about starting a program of walking:

Walking is one of the easiest ways to be physically active. You can do it almost anywhere and at any time. Walking is also inexpensive–all you need is a pair of shoes with sturdy heel support.

Walking may:

  • Give you more energy and make you feel good.
  • Reduce stress and help you relax.
  • Tone your muscles.
  • Increase the number of calories your body uses.
  • Strengthen your bones and muscles.
  • Improve your stamina and your fitness.
  • Lower your risk of chronic diseases, such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

What are they talking about “may” do these things? I’ll be pissed, if I’ve walked 1700 miles for nothing.
