Zumewalk'n with my iPhoneApple has created a few iconic products but the iPhone may in the high of all highs, pushing Apple’s cult like vibe way over the top. The iPhone’s shear combination of all things possible is staggering.

It’s a phone/app outlet/music/camera/GPS/restaurant critic/browser/email/alarm/calendar/address book/friend/secret messenger/the list is almost endless. And now, it can take a read on your heart.

Dorene Internicola at Reuters writes, “iPhones and PCs take Fitness to Heart,” a look at technologies growing place in the management and reporting of workout statistics.

“Now you – and your personal trainer – can also use it to listen to your heart, as new technology turns the iPhone into a heart monitor and fitness tracking system.”

“SM Heart Link, a so-called “wireless bridge,” collects data from sensors — such as heart rate chest straps and cycling sensors on bikes –and sends it to the iPhone for display and tracking.”

But somewhere between the future (iPhone) and the past (notebook) falls the middle way. At the American Heart Association’s (AHA) online cardiovascular center, Heart 360 (www.heart360.org), a user can enter blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose numbers, log physical activities, record weight, and keep a diary of medications

Dr. Daniel Jones, past president of the AHA, firmly believes in using technology to help people keep track of their health.

“Heart rate is much more valuable when you integrate it with other data,” said Jones, who is dean of the School of Medicine at the University of Mississippi.”

Whether you use a calendar, notebook, Nike+ or your iPhone to track workouts, I think using a technological solution can help you set goals and is an important factor in workout success.
