One of the most dangerous occupations on the planet is firefighter. The key to success and safety is being in top shape, Becky Sherek for Firehouse.com gives us an inside look at the fitness life of firefighters, in "Fire-d Up for Fitness."
It has been said that firefighters expend as much energy during a major emergency as the players in a football game, if not more. This assertion is supported by many studies that demonstrate the need for and benefits of high levels of physical fitness in the fire service.
The sedentary hours firefighters may spend in the fire station may be as hazardous...

My heart will start beating slower and slower especially if you don't join me in a walk this spring. We had a beautiful weekend here in Washington, DC and walking outside was such a pleasure, it was great to see so many people out soaking it up with a walk. There are so many factors that lead to a healthy life and heart, one major heart felt benefit is getting aerobic exercising 4-6 days a week and a vigorous walk is one of the best methods.
Briskly walking can provide almost the same aerobic benefits and calorie burn as jogging. WebMD's, Robin Parks, MS gives us a peek at some of the benefits...
Michelle Sathe, Senior Staff Writer for The Signal in the Santa Clarita Valley writes about a fantastic idea out of trainer Chris Morley and Whole Foods Market called "Walk it Off."
Need to lose weight? Get fit? Stay social? Reduce your anxiety? Chris Morley has a one-stop solution for you — walk it off!
The certified personal trainer and entrepreneur launched her “Walk It Off” walking program with a special offer from program sponsor Valencia’s Whole Foods Market, where Morley was actively signing up customers on Feb. 28. Each new client received a $20 Whole Foods gift card, free...
Sometimes when I walk long distances, like last summer when I walked just under 36 miles in 8 and a half hours, I achieve this mild state of disconnection or a mediative like state. Maybe it was a state of connection rather than disconnection. I don't know, it happens, I like and let it happen.
What happens is my mind gets extremely clear and focused and I do some of my best thinking in this state. I solve business problems, enter an ultra-creative state or get crystal clear clarity on issues that I've been wrestling with during the day. I'm not trying to get all, cumbiyah-ish, it's just something...
In some ways, I love the time change and in others hate it. This article from by Angelique Millette at CityMommy, San Francisco gives some very helpful tips on how to handle the challenges of spring forward with a toddler,
You can help your baby/toddler by starting to adjust ahead of the time change on Sunday. Starting Wed night, begin to put baby down 10 minutes earlier for bed. You can do this by comforting, singing or reading, and/or starting the bedtime ritual/routine 10 minutes earlier. Do this for the rest of the week, so when the time change does happen, your baby or toddler will have...
Here's another recipe from the amazing and fabulous ExHotGirl.
This is a vast improvement upon the lasagna recipe I posted a while back from Quick & Healthy Recipes and Ides. (Where I get most of my recipes for the week.)
I liked it well enough but it was too thin, and just didn't have enough substance. So, I modified!
Jenn's Kick ASS Lasagna
1 large container fat free cottage cheese (small curd)
2 tbsp dried parsley
2 tsp chopped garlic
1 jar spaghetti sauce (I used Prego's heart healthy sundried tomato and vegetable chunk)
1 box whole wheat uncooked lasagna noodles
2 cups...
How many dudes do you know that can wear a plaid skirt and get away with it. None. Try it any other day of the year and you'll get beat up in the parking lot.
Do you want to celebrate St. Patrick's Day with Zume? He's going to wear his kilt. I know gifts aren't a big part of St. Patrick's Day but look at all these cool things from Savvy Chick,
Celebrate seven days of St. Patrick's Day with Savvy Chick. Get drunk, buy lots of green stuff and talk with an Irish accent for all we care.. but the goal is to have a little fun around here. From shamrocks to shiny silver celtic jewels.. and let's not forget...
The time change can be a positive or it can be a negative depends on where you sit in your fitness program. Are you getting into shape or are just getting started? I have something for you, no matter where you are, from Yahoo Shine.
Nothing like a fantastic perspective, now let's get going on turning 'spring forward' into a positive and motivational experience, by Jessica Ashley from Yahoo Shine tells us her method in "Do You Dread or Look Forward to Springing Forward,"
I dreaded the last daylight-saving time. While many people look forward to the extra hour of sleep it affords on that weekend,...
We live in a fast pace world and most of the time, I love it but sometimes finding my balance is a requirement especially with regards to exercise and career. When does regular exercise not become an option but becomes a necessity. Penelope Trunk's, Brazen Careerist is finding that "Regular Exercise is No Longer an Option."
When email first became widely used, I worked for a guy who thought it was optional. At some point, it truly was optional. High-level executives used to be able to say, "Call my secretary. I don't have email." I remember thinking that my boss did not understand reality....
Where does the ripple in the water begin? Within you.
Starting an exercise program emanates from within whether it begins from pain, frustration or some other personal emotion. The starting is always a difficult moment but once you get going the ripple grows and grows, then it is - you. This is the secret. My neighbor said to me one day, that I was like a machine, always walking, you never quit. I took this as a great compliment, a part of me and I've worked for every piece of it. The secret is in the starting, so start. One simple movement forward toward your goal. Define a simple goal then...
