Gary T, a member of USA TODAY's 2007 Weight-Loss Challenge, has worn a path around his backyard from walking the perimeter so much. He shed more than 90 pounds. A new study finds it doesn't take hours of daily walking to improve your health.
How amazing he lost 90 pounds walking in his backyard. Now he needs some tunes to spice it up.
"If you take a brisk walk for as little as 20 to 30 minutes three times a week, you'll feel more energetic, happier and calmer, says a study presented Thursday at an American Heart Association meeting in Colorado Springs. This adds to the growing body of evidence...
I love this article because I'm a "stander." I work and stand at my desk instead of sitting. I have no chair. But I like this idea, I guess, as long as you can get some work done. Not just get a workout done.
"I Put In 5 Miles at the Office" - NY Times article:
"Enthusiasts began following Dr. Levine’s example, constructing treadmill desks that range from sleekly robotic set-ups to rickety mash-ups that could be Wall-E’s long-lost kin. But the recent introduction of an all-in-one treadmill desk from Details may inch work-walking into the mainstream, as dozens of businesses invest in the hardware...
Short but sweet. A link and a quote:
"Since then, she has combined regular exercise with a low-calorie diet and has lost 94 pounds in a little over 1½ years."

PS - She will make it to her goal!
Patience grasshopper. It takes time to lose weight. Years to put it on and years to properly take it off. Hate the way that sounds?
Here's what Newsweek says, but it's not the article that stuck out to me, it was the first comment:

"I'd be really careful about daily weighing. Tends to get people obsessed, especially as it is normal for weight to fluctuate within a small range (but as high as 5 pounds)."
The focus of the article, "What Works", is on keeping a personal food diary. I believe this would work but only as a learning tool. What do you eat or how much,...
The "Biggest Loser" is about short term pain for short term gain.
SHORT TERM is any program that focuses weight loss on a very short period of time, like an eighteen week TV program. My bet is 90-95% of the "Biggest Loser" participants will gain all the weight back plus additional pounds. My hope, is they don't, but statistics are not on their side.
My contention, in order to lose weight you must do it the same way you gained it. Slowly over time. Most of us don't gain weight quickly, it's gained over years. Here's what Meghan Vivo says in an article titled, "Why Quick-Fix Weight Loss...
Can you Hulu for weight loss? No - it's more TV. Check it at Hulu.com
But you can lose weight with an old fashion "hula hoop" or the new and improved weighted "hula hoop".

See the short term results and the long term results. Where are the "Biggest Losers" now?
Also check out the "Life after 'Loser': Everyday is a struggle". Just like the rest of us. Inspiring stories for sure.
MikeZ - "walking step by step"
Do they work? Have they worked for you? Do they work short term and long term?
Let me know? Please, I would love to hear your stories.
I have a diet plan. It's called throw away your scale and walk five or six days a week for two years.
Start small and increase your walking distance gradually but walk quickly. Don't weigh yourself at the end of the first year. In the second year, cut out 500 calories per day and keep walking for one more year. Try to get to the point where you're walking 45-60 minutes per walk. Now at the end of the second year, weigh yourself. I bet you have lost weight....
We eat. We eat to live. We are what we eat? Whatever!
I don't know about you but I get tired of hearing these kind of things all the time.
Who knows the truth, I know one thing for sure, if food taste good I eat less and feel more satisfied with what I eat. Which means, I control my portions and end up happy with my meal and myself. Find those awesome recipes that satisfy your hunger and soul like Chicken Breasts in Mushroom Sauce from Exhotgirl. Find the time to enjoy your meals, the company you keep and you'll eat a lot less.
Spice it up and enjoy your food. It's OK to love what you eat.

Don't measure weight loss with your scale. Scales don't help you lose weight. Please, give away your scale while you embark on this journey to get fit.
Give it to your mom, sister, friend, neighbor or workout partner but get it out of your house for one year.
Free yourself to work on goals that are positive like walking for one year. Now weigh yourself.
